![]() So we are at 120 to 130 people or more already on the plane by the time the B1-30 folks get to board. Group 3 - Family boarding (before B positions). So another 45 people board so we are up to about 100 people out of 143 to 175 seat capacity. So now that 30 to 55 people have boarded the plane it's time for Group 2 (This doesn't even include any non-rev airline employees that preboard or people with onward tight connections that got some weird waiver).Ī 1-15 (Business Select) also boards at this time so that can be up to 15 people Technically by SW rules, they are only supposed to board with one additional travel companion but in reality, it can be many more. This is usually 1 or 2 disabled persons in wheelchairs and about 6 to 8 non-disabled people in wheelchairs that just want to board early (and their families). Group 1 - Preboarding for disabled people. Keep in mind that there are 143 to 175 seats on a Southwest 737 depending on the type. People misunderstand their boarding process. ![]() ![]() It isn't immoral to fix the policy to prevent abuse, something has to curb the behavior we are seeing and I believe this is a remedy, perhaps even with an exception or two for passengers with abundance of disability truly clearing the bar for an exception, not just a chubby Karen Those same travelers work their way to the back with assigned seating, it's only difficult with this policy because the only control is boarding order. if it were any other airline, they likely wouldve been seating in that general area anyway, and if they can't then BUY A1-15. The disabled line should begin at row X (+5-10 rows behind emergency exit). Regular flyers can wait for them to board so they too can wait for us to deplane since they need more time, so do it when the plane is empty. Here's my proposal: sure let them board early BUT proceed directly and conveniently to the back of the plane. AList feels meaningless with the abuse of policy. and getting worse since everyone is "disabled" and needs to board early and get the best seats and be first to deplane. You'd also have to account for tight connections/delays which would again slow things down if a counter visit is required. Adding another layer of logistics would only slow things down, especially if it involves a counter visit. Even if it's against the "rules" it doesn't make the plane board faster if you restrict grandma from joining family boarding. You have to remember that family boarding is meant to make boarding more efficient. This would create more problems then it solves. and 2) people can’t game the system as easily by lurking in that group between A&B. That way, it solves two things 1) there’s only the allowed number of people boarding with the kids, not Mom and Dad and Mom’s sister’s brother in law from two doors down, etc. I know southwest is trending away from counter visits with now being able to purchase A1-15 on the app, but family boarding should require Mom and / or Dad and the kids to visit the gate counters, and the SWA agent there can mark the boarding passes “FB” with a sharpie or initiate some digital indicator on a mobile boarding pass. I wish they would be stricter with pre-boarding and the number of tag-alongs, and maybe limit family boarding to mom, dad, and minor kids instead of 2nd cousins and all. I guess what I'm saying is it's not horrible, but SW could do a bit of a better job of patrolling cheaters. It's supposed to be 1 person to assist (I think), and I see that get fudged a lot. What I do see happen a lot is someone who pre-boards taking their whole group with them. I was A31 and I boarded with someone in my group that was A30 and got very abruptly told to wait my turn, while the ops agent made a scene to make the announcement for the next group.then let me go 10 seconds later. That ually I see ops agents patrolling it pretty well. Many people put effort in to their boarding position, and many people assholes who don't like to "cheat" their way to a better position. On Southwest, however, it's actually a big deal. But in Lufthansa's case seats are assigned so aside from being rude, it doesn't hurt anything. ![]() On a recent Lufthansa flight a very large family in economy cut in front of me and pushed their way to the front of the line and made sure they boarded before business was even done boarding.
